The American Association of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology (AABIP) is proud to announce the Geoffrey McLennan Memorial Award for Advances in Interventional Pulmonology. Geoffrey McLennan was a professor and scholar in pulmonary medicine, radiology, and biomedical engineering and made significant advances in the practice of interventional pulmonology during his career. A self-taught bronchoscopist, he fine-tuned his skills by working with individuals such as Donald Zavala, MD and Jean-Francois Dumon, MD. Throughout his career he made many strides to improve the lives of lung cancer and COPD patients through application of interventional pulmonology technology. Dr. McLennan published more than 150 peer reviewed scholarly articles dealing with many subjects in interventional pulmonology, but most significantly, in the area of improved imaging capabilities and virtual bronchoscopy. He mentored several pulmonary fellows who have gone on to successful interventional pulmonology careers, as well as many graduate and post-graduate students who have also been highly successful. He was a highly sought after speaker at national and international meetings. He was a scholar having had many opinions and knowledge on a variety of subjects not limited to medicine. He was an inventor, holding many patents for devices that have impacted medical care in the United States and worldwide. Dr. McLennan died prematurely, July 27th 2010 leaving behind a devoted family and countless colleagues and students.
In honor and memoriam of Dr. Geoffrey McLennan, the AABIP is accepting nominations for the Geoffrey McLennan Memorial Award for Advances in Interventional Pulmonology. Nominees should be individuals who are in their junior to mid-level careers (Assistant to Associate Professor within 10 years of completing fellowship) and be judged by their peers to have a high likelihood of continued success and contributions in this field. Recipients of the award will receive an invitation to speak at the AABIP Post-Graduate Course on Interventional Pulmonology at the annual Chest meeting.
Nominations for this prestigious award should be sent electronically to Denise Holcomb (info@aabronchology.org ) with the subject line “AABIP McLennan Award.” All nominations should have two letters of recommendation (one from the nominator and one additional supporting letter) and be accompanied by the nominee’s curriculum vitae.
